The joyous event back in January is marred by this female’s release location. The Picayune Strand is within spitting distance of the I-75 killing corridor that has claimed countless panthers. Here, too, was a wasted opportunity to put a potential breeder north of the Caloosahatchee River barrier, which a female has yet to cross. The […]

Reviewing pics like these from Wellsboro, PA used to be our bread and butter. But 14 years of looking at hundreds of bobcat and housecat photographs reported as cougars, with only one cougar confirmation from Nova Scotia to Mississippi crossing our desks (Greenwich, CT 2011) since 1999, helped us realize the ubiquity of misidentifications. The Cougar Rewilding Foundation recruited the Center for Biological Diversity to draft the panther restoration petition cited in the article, restorations mandated in the the most recent panther recovery plan. Center for Biological Diversity press release […]

At this time last year, 20 panthers were known to have died. The most common causes of death are vehicle strikes and fights with other panthers over territories. The panthers that die on highways are essentially being “harvested” by vehicles instead of panther hunters. It’s a shame that some of these cats aren’t relocated to […]
