Another set of hoax photos is making the rounds of the Internet and is beginning to show up in the news. http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100106/OUTDOORS02/100109931/-1/SPORTS. Hoax photos are pictures of real cougars.  They become hoaxes when people start claiming they are proof of cougars in states or provinces where they don’t occur, to further other personal agendas or maybe just to play a joke on a friend. To the best of our knowledge, the first time that these photos were posted was on November 23, 2009 on this forum – http://www.hayabusa.org/forum/random-thoughts/121383-colorado-kittys-want-pet-them-pics.html , The person who posted the photo claims that they were taken by his uncle from the deck of his home in Conifer, Colorado.  Conifer is just west of Denver.

The post includes two photos of a cougar standing diagonally to the driveway.  One photo is cropped and enlarged to show the cougar better.  In the other, the vehicle on the right has a Colorado license plate, as shown in the enhanced photo.  We have not verified that the pictures come from Conifer, but they likely were taken in Colorado.

“They are hoaxes because people are passing them off as proof of cougars where they don’t actually occur, at least not in any numbers, or in the case of these photos, perhaps to frighten people.” See the Pocono Record article http://www.poconorecord.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100106/OUTDOORS02/100109931/-1/SPORTS . Notice the photo in the article that is claimed to have been taken in Montague NJ is the same as the fourth photo below.
