Camera catches mountain lion near Vermillion

The South Dakota cougar hunting season continues until March 31st.  Any landowner or leaser of land can kill a cougar on his land in South Dakota at any time of the year.  If the cougar in the photo has moved east into Iowa, he could be killed at any time for any reason.  Cougars are protected only across the Vermillion River in Nebraska.  The chances that this cougar will survive and reach one of the Great Lake states where cougars are protected (Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan) are dicey.  The possibility that he (likely because the great majority of dispersing cougars are males) will survive, meet a female in one of the Upper Great Lakes states, and father kittens is vanishingly small.
