Nebraska Head-Burying

Despite citing briefly research on the effects of sport hunting on cougar populations that the Cougar Rewilding Foundation and other advocates sent to Nebraska Game and Parks, Commissioner Stacey Swinney can’t get his head beyond the idea that more killing is the only way to manage a cougar population.

Rather than taking an honest look into the research, rather than educating and perhaps even trying to disarm the fear of his constituents about the statistical threat cougars pose to pets, livestock and the public (not a single incident in 20 years of Nebraska cougar dispersal/recolonization), the Commissioner lapses into the kind of science-denying, pioneer-era predator prejudice we continue to see dominating state predator management decisions Рa level of denial that borders on addiction.
